France plans to withdraw troops from Mali

The withdrawal comes as relations between France and Mali's military government have deteriorated. Macron plans to reduce 5,000 French troops in the Sahel.

The French news agency AFP reports that Macron's announcement will put an end to nine years of French troops in Mali ahead of a European Union-Africa summit in Brussels. In 2013, France began sending troops to fight jihadists in northern Mali.

However, in 2015, jihadists again stormed central Mali and launched attacks in neighboring Niger and Burkina Faso.
